Jay Ellis recently made his debut as an author with the release of his book, Did Everyone Have an Imaginary Friend (or Just Me)?. On Tuesday (Aug. 13), his one-man book tour stopped in Inglewood as the second Los Angeles stop and it became an unofficial Insecure reunion as many familiar faces from the cast and crew came through to support and celebrate Ellis.
Issa Rae, his former love interest on the beloved HBO comedy, co-moderated the conversation about his literary debut.
Along with Rae, Yvonne Orji, Neil Brown Jr., Y’lan Noel, Prentice Penny, Wade Allain-Marcus, and some crew members popped out at the tour.
When speaking with VIBE ahead of the book release, Ellis explained, “It’s a collection of short stories from my childhood. I moved around a bunch. I went to 12 schools in 13 years. I had a childhood imaginary friend for a little bit and so I asked this question of why did I as a Black kid in the ’90s have this imaginary friend?”
In the book, he spotlights experiences such as “my first love with a third grade teacher [when] she broke my heart [by saying], ‘I’m not going to be your girlfriend,'” joining a “gang” for a week in seventh grade until he realized he had to be “jumped in,” and road tripping with his grandparents across the country.”
The father of two noted, “It’s all these stories that I think made me who I am and hopefully answer the question why I had an imaginary friend. It’s really all about imagination, creativity, and play, and how we all need it.”
