Angie Stone has claimed her ex-boyfriend D’Angelo doesn’t want to work with her because his pride as a man has gotten in the way of his artistic aspirations.

In the latest segment released from her conversation with VladTV, Stone reflected on the chatter amongst fans who want her and D’Angelo to work on music again. According to the singer, that’ll never happen because his pride won’t allow it.

The pair were a couple in the ‘90s and share a son together, Michael D’Angelo Archer II. Angie served as an inspiration for D’Angelo’s debut album Brown Sugar, and he helped produce her debut, Black Diamond.

“Let me tell you something, and I’m being 100, he would be a lot further here today, and I’m not discrediting him,” Stone said. “Don’t misunderstand me, but because of the powers that be, everybody and they momma wish Angie Stone and D’Angelo would get back together and work again. I’ve heard it a million times.”

She added: “His pride as a man would not allow of him to do that because he doesn’t want to share the credit. He doesn’t want it to look like, ‘What if I get with her and we win? Then it’s going to look like she did it.’ I mean the writings on the wall, but if you want to roll like that, I’m not mad at you, but that’s not my spirit.

“My spirit is we have a winning element God gave us that. You didn’t give me that. God gave us that, and what you should do, if nothing else, is put your difference aside. You have children and say, let’s get in the studio and work on our God-given craft, but his pride would not allow him to go there, and it’s sad, but the industry created that energy, and because they created it, they have to now suffer, and wait for the kind of music that we created. It would never happen because that we factor isn’t there.”

The pair’s son, Archer II, is an artist himself and he recently recreated one of his dad’s songs. Swayvo Twain, Archer’s rap name, posted a video on Instagram last month showcasing his remix of his father’s song “Shit, Damn, Motherfucker,” from his 1995 debut album Brown Sugar.

Where D’Angelo’s original oozes with funky ’90s R&B grooves, his son’s version — simply titled “S.D.M.” — puts a modern spin on things with trap drums, booming 808s and lyrics like: “I feel like I’m the shit, damn/ And this muthafucka lit.”

Despite not being together, Stone still has love for her ex. During a talk with Fox Soul in 2021, the 61-year-old admitted D’Angelo was her greatest love.

“When you’ve experienced true love, real love, it never dies,” she said. “Even though you go your separate ways and life goes on for everyone and you take different paths, you never ever forget the purest of love. That was a genuine love that no one has ever been able to compete with.”

D’Angelo has also celebrated two major milestones in 2023 so far. January 25 marked the 23rd anniversary of his critically acclaimed sophomore LP Voodoo, and he celebrated his 49th birthday on February 11.

Next December will mark 10 years since the crooner’s last album — 2014’s Black Messiah— although he told D-Nice in 2021 that his fourth album is still on the way.
