Doja Cat Not A Fan Of ‘Disrespectful’ Britney Spears Shaved Head Comparisons

Doja Cat has said she’s not a fan of the “disrespectful” comparisons people are making between her and Britney Spears due to her shaved head.

Spears’ infamous 2007 head shaving incident became some of the biggest tabloid fodder in pop culture history, with numerous outlets branding the pop star as having had a “meltdown” or being crazy for removing her long blonde locks.

The moment played a big part in ultimately convincing a judge to place her under her notorious conservatorship, which meant her father Jamie had control over all her personal assets including finances. Spears was finally freed from the conservatorship in 2021.

Doja Cat told Variety on Wednesday (February 1) that she faced similar scrutiny after she shaved her head in August 2022, with many comparing her hair removal to Spears’.

“It’s so incredibly disrespectful for people to be minimizing what Britney went through and make a joke out of something that was very serious and a big deal in her life,” she explained. “Every time I see a comment like that, I can’t compute what’s happening, other than it’s just an awful thing.”

Doja went on to say that her shaved head was just because she needed a change. “I wasn’t working out and wasn’t really taking care of myself in the way that I wanted to. I was like, ‘I need to do something,’ so I just chopped it all off,” she said. “And I could see the shape of my head. I could see my whole face… it’s the best choice I’ve ever made, and I’ve never felt more beautiful.”

Elsewhere in the interview, the “Woman” singer said she plans on dropping an album before the end of 2023, and said she’s been exploring a punkier sound.

“I want to explore punk,” she said. “But not pop-punk. I feel like we have enough pop-punk artists right now. And if there needs to be more, then let there be more, but I don’t think I’m the one to do it.”

“I want to explore more of a raw, unfiltered, hardcore punk sort of thing. It’s just something that I’m doing for my own personal fun — getting some drummers and guitarists together. And I don’t even know if that’s gonna make it out there.”

Doja Cat had previously said the follow-up to her Grammy-nominated album Planet Her would be much more rap-heavy.

“I’ve rapped since the beginning, and I really couldn’t even sing that well to begin with — I got a lot better,” Doja said in an interview with Elle at the time.. “I use my voice as a tool to create these worlds, and it’s fine if people think that I can’t rap.”

While Doja Cat was forced to pull out of a massive summer tour alongside The Weeknd due to tonsil surgery last year, the 26-year-old has said her next album is “coming up,” and even claimed it would be a double album produced by 9th Wonder and Jay Versace.

“I have been getting songs and things sent to me,” she told Elle. “Oh fuck, I wish I could tell people! There’s some really cool stuff that I got sent from friends. They’re all working on beats, and I’m giving them notes and they know what I want, so I’m excited.”
