Donald Glover has confirmed that Childish Gambino is back in full effect.

Glover stopped to talk to E! News on the red carpet of the 2022 Golden Globes on Tuesday night (January 10), where he was nominated for Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series for Atlanta‘s fourth and final season.

The multi-hyphenate was asked by E! host Laverne Cox about when he’d be releasing something new on the musical front, and he had some great news for his fans.

“I’m making music right now,” he said. “I love it. I’m actually working. I’m in the studio. I’ve been, like, bringing people in — like secret people. Like, working on little things. But I’ve just been, like, making it for fun for right now. But soon, something will happen I promise. Something will happen.”

Donald Glover has been flirting with musical retirement since June 2017 when he hinted at hanging up the stage name Childish Gambino at the Governors Ball Music Festival. He told fans: “I’ll see you for the last Gambino album.”

However, he continued to make music, and the Childish Gambino album, 3.15.20, arrived in 2020. Later that year, he told I May Destroy You creator Michaela Coel that he isn’t quite done with music, adding that he doesn’t think he’s accomplished everything he wants to in that space.

“I still don’t feel like I’m done with that [music] project,” he told Coel. “With writing, I definitely feel, like, on the last project and on the project I’m working now, musically too, it’s all spiritual. It’s all spiritual. A feeling of, ‘I love us. I love me.’ I really do.”

During a visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live! in March of 2022, he revealed he’s been in the studio lately.

“I’m making a lot of music. I really love doing it,” he said. “I’ve made a bunch of it. It’s just really about how to experience it at this point.”

On the acting front, Glover is reportedly considering starring in the forthcoming Community movie. When the film was announced, he had not yet committed to the role, but now according to creator Dan Harmon, Glover is “down to clown.”

“For lack of a better word, there was a ball fumbled… [Glover] is down to clown,” Harmon said about Glover’s involvement with the film. “Man, I would not want to think about making [the movie] without Donald.”
