Erykah Badu has responded to rumors that she has “mystical” powers when it comes to making magic in the bedroom.
In an interview on the Tamron Hall Show, the singer spoke about her recent profile in Vogue, which featured a tour of her home; her vaginal-scented incense; and the ongoing mythology that claims men can’t look at her without falling in love.
“That’s why I try to wear a hat,” Badu said. “‘Cause I don’t know what’s happening.” She then added that she’s single, and said her superpowers don’t just apply to men.
“Women too,” she continued, “and children and animals. Any living, breathing thing … I think it is indescribable, and the bedroom that’s not where you’re gonna find it because my magic doesn’t lie between my thighs it lies between my ears.”
Erykah Badu’s latest comments come after she and The D.O.C. became trending topics on social media in January following a picture posted by their daughter Puma showing off their rear ends.
“So yall advertising azz objectivfying and exploiting yall bodies for personal gain then post for likes views and engagement for payment,” one Instagram user criticized. “This is clearly commercial prostitution.”
“Anything for social media,” another said. “Thanks for the free b. daddy is proud. wuz up doc.”
Puma was the first to respond to the criticized, and asked Instagram what exactly the issue was.
“I posted a pic (not my mom) of me and my mama badu in some cute form fitting pants. I’m an adult. What’s the real issue? Let’s discuss,” 18-year-old Puma wrote in a separate post.
Erykah and D.O.C. both replied in Puma’s comments, with the former writing “Well…” as if waiting to hear what people had to say.
Erykah also responded to The D.O.C.’s comment, calling him “the best.”
Speaking to HipHopDX last year about his new documentary, The D.O.C. opened up about his relationship with his ex and child’s mother and revealed they’re still so close that she even delivered his children with his new wife.
“I owe Erykah everything,” the former N.W.A member said. “I owe her everything. I mean, Erykah is a soulmate. She brought amazing energy to this film in a lot of ways. She was really in touch with us in a lot of ways behind the scenes, and did a lot to help us push this thing forward. And just as a man went forward, my two sons, Erykah was the doula, she delivered my boys.”
He added: “Honestly, she’s the coolest person that I’ve ever spoken to, ever. She is cool as fuck. I mean, she’s just got such a presence. I would describe her as ethereal.”
In her interview with Tamron Hall, she spoke about her work as a doula and said she does it free of charge, and also performs death doula work for those about to pass.
“It’s special to me,” she said. “It’s an honor to be the hand. To be that vessel who’s there for whatever everyone needs. But being of service is very important, and I’ve been so blessed in my life. My cup runneth over with blessings and gifts. It’s just a natural thing. I want to give back in that kind of way … It’s all the creator.”
