Jay-Z combed out eight years of locks to rock a fro in honor of his father, Agnes Reeves, whose favorite sports team was from Philly.

The transformation happened before a show with The Roots in Philadelphia, connecting to his dad’s love for the city and his signature fro style.

But the hair journey started years earlier. When his daughter Blue was about five years old, she wasn’t feeling confident about her hair. That moment inspired Jay-Z to grow out his locks to show her that his hair had the same texture as hers.

The move became a powerful statement about embracing natural curls and Black beauty. Blue’s confidence journey even inspired her to write the award-winning book Hair Love and to create songs like “Baby Hair,” “Formation,” and “Brownkin Girl.”

The detangling process wasn’t quick. It took multiple days of careful work using CÉCRED products.

Jay-Z led the effort, starting at the bottom of each lock and working up until reaching the base, which was the hardest part to detangle.

The team used detangling spray mixed with moisturizing deep conditioner and moisture-sealing lotion to create the right slip and hydration.

Sometimes they detangled in diagonal lines; sometimes with hands; sometimes with brushes to work the products into larger sections.

Patience and love were key. There were times when Collins massaged his hair for one to two hours per lock until she could gradually separate it with her fingers.

Some nights, they left products in overnight, especially on the roots, where detangling was most difficult. It wasn’t just one person removing the locks—it was a family affair. Blue came to help, and every hand that contributed made the process smoother.

Jay-Z’s commitment to consistency made the whole thing possible. His hair was in immaculate condition, which meant they could retain so much of his fullness, length, and thickness while combing out eight years of growth.
