Mariah Carey’s 'All I Want For Christmas' Breaks Spotify Record For Single Day Streams

Mariah Carey‘s mega hit “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has broken another record, this time logging the most streams on Spotify in one day.

According to Spotify’s fan-generated “Daily Top Songs Global” chart, the modern classic Christmas track was streamed 21,273,357 times on Saturday (December 24). The record was previously held by Adele’s “Easy On Me,” which Spotify users played 19,749,704 on its release date, October 15, 2021.

“All I Want For Christmas Is You” previously claimed the record for most daily Spotify streams on Christmas eve in 2017 with 10.8 million plays, in 2018 with 10.82 million, and again in 2019 with a little over 12 million streams.

In addition to earning a new record, Mariah Carey’s ode to the holidays topped Spotify Weekly Top Songs Global chart this week as well, with 48,156,836 streams. Since the streaming platform launched in 2008, “All I Want For Christmas Is You” has been streamed over 1.4 billion times.

In a 2019 article, CNN reported the song had earned over $2 million in royalties on Spotify alone. The same year, the then 25-year-old song topped the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for the first time. Two years later, the song was believed to have earned between $3,249,600 and $4,332,800 just on Spotify streams.

“Mariah can sit on her ass for the rest of her life and ONLY promote AIWFC and still be a millionaire,” a source told TMZ last year. The above numbers also don’t take into account other streams such as on Apple Music.

The song’s 25-year anniversary also earned Mariah Carey three Guinness World Records: highest-charting holiday (Christmas/New Year) song on the Hot 100 by a solo artist, the most streamed track on Spotify in 24 hours and the most weeks in the UK singles Top 10 chart for a Christmas song.

In recent years, the multiplatinum singer has leaned into her title as the “Queen of Christmas” with “All I Want For Christmas Is You” themed merchandise, a children’s book, an animated film and two Apple TV+ specials.

Mariah has even leaned into the social media theory that she kicks off the Christmas countdown immediately after Halloween, posting a meme of her own at midnight on November 1.

This year, the Grammy Award winner brought the Christmas fun to Roblox with a three-day virtual Winter Wonderland concert series that, according to NME, saw her perform old favorites and new music before closing the night out with a performance of her inescapable Christmas hit. Her live Merry Christmas To All show at Madison Square Garden was also filmed for a CBS broadcast and is now available to stream on Paramount+.

As of August of this year, Mariah Carey holds the distinction, alongside JAY-Z and Snoop Dogg, of being the only artists to have landed a Top 10 Billboard Hot 100 spot in each decade from the 1990s through the 2020s.
