Matthew Cherry Announces New ‘Young Love’ Series, Headed To Max This September

Matthew Cherry’s new series, Young Love, is headed to MAX on Sept. 21. The animated show expounds upon the story told in Cherry’s Oscar-winning short film, Hair Love.

The show is described by MAX as “an honest, heartfelt, and comedic glimpse into the lives of African-American millennial parents Stephen Love (Scott “Kid Cudi” Mescudi) and Angela Young (Issa Rae) as they experience the relatable ups and downs of modern life.”

Young, who has now been in remission for two months following a battle with cancer, struggles to regain her footing again as a hairstylist while Love makes an attempt to find a career as a musician in the highly-competitive industry. Together, they navigate the demands of parenthood with their adorably hilarious daughter, Zuri (Brooke Monroe Conaway).

Set in Chicago, the tight-knit family finds heartwarming and relatable ways to handle their professional lives, marriage, parenting, social issues, and multi-generational dynamics as they collectively aim to make a better life for themselves.

Rae, Kid Cudi, and Conaway star alongside Loretta Devine as Gigi Young, Harry Lennix as Russell Young, Tamar Braxton as Star, Sheryl Lee Ralph as Sheree, Debra Wilson, and more.

When Young Love was first greenlit in July 2020, Cherry shared in a statement, “I am beyond excited to continue telling the story of Stephen, Angela, and Zuri and further explore the family dynamics of a young Black millennial family we established in our short film Hair Love as an animated series. Couldn’t ask for better partners in Sony Pictures Animation and HBO Max in helping us get Young Love out to the world.”

When speaking on MAX’s decision to pick up the series, Billy Wee, SVP Original Animation for HBO Max, added, “Hair Love struck a chord that is still resonating deeply with audiences of all ages. Matthew and Sony Animation’s creative voices are a welcomed addition to the HBO Max family and we can’t wait to bring this joyous story to the world.”

Following its premiere, the 12-episode season will release four episodes weekly until its season finale on Thursday, October 5. Check out a preview of the series below.
