Mystikal Seeks To Withdraw Guilty Before Sentencing In Louisiana Rape Case

Mystikal is attempting to reverse a guilty plea in his 2022 rape case, claiming emotional pressure influenced his decision to accept the deal.

Mystikal faces the prospect of sentencing this week, but the veteran Louisiana rapper is now asking a judge to let him take back the guilty plea he entered earlier this year.

The rapper admitted guilt in a rape case that has followed him since 2022.

According to a motion filed Friday, the artist born Michael Tyler, seeks to withdraw the plea he entered on March 17, arguing that he did not have enough time to fully understand the consequences of admitting guilt.

Tyler originally pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of third-degree rape after prosecutors dropped more serious allegations that included first-degree rape and false imprisonment. The plea agreement carried a sentencing cap of 20 years in prison.

But, the rapper says he was not in his right mind when he made the stunning decision.

In the newly filed motion, Tyler claims he experienced significant emotional distress at the time of the plea and felt pressured to make an immediate decision. His legal team argues those circumstances prevented him from adequately considering the long-term impact of the agreement.

The case originates from allegations made in 2022 involving a woman who was at Tyler’s home in Prairieville, Louisiana. An arrest warrant and local outlet WBRZ reported Tyler accused the woman of stealing money and then assaulted her.

The woman reportedly told authorities that Tyler punched, choked her and pulled out portions of her braided hair. He then allegedly confiscated her phone and keys to stop her from leaving the residence.

The woman also alleged that while searching for the missing money she discovered what she believed to be methamphetamine inside the home. She told investigators the rap artist appeared to experience mood swings before allegedly forcing her onto a bed and sexually assaulting her.

Authorities further charged that Tyler transferred money to himself from the woman’s phone following the crime before eventually allowing her to leave.

Tyler’s criminal history has dwarfed his musical legacy as he was previously convicted of sexual assault.

In 2003, Tyler was convicted in a separate sexual assault case involving his hairstylist. He ultimately served six years in prison and was required to register as a sex offender following his release.

A judge has not yet ruled on Tyler’s request to withdraw the plea. If the motion is denied, sentencing would likely proceed under the terms of the agreement reached earlier this year.
