Victoria Monét Talks Being “Proud” Bisexual Black Woman

The “On My Mama” hitmaker chats with Gayle King.

Victoria Monét heads into the 66th Annual Grammy Awards on February 4 with seven nominations. The Atlanta-born, Sacramento-raised singer/songwriter is a top contender for Best New Artist.

Broadcast journalist Gayle King sat down with Victoria Monét for an interview on CBS Mornings. The conversation featured the 34-year-old performer discussing her sexuality.

“I get the question a lot, it’s like, ‘So since you’re in a relationship with a man, do you still like girls?’ I’m like, ‘Yes, it’s just like if you’re in a relationship with your girlfriend, do you still like girls? Yes,’” Monét said.

The Jaguar II album creator continued, “It doesn’t take away the attraction to other people. It’s a choice that you’re in to be faithful in that relationship.”

Victoria Monét made history as a member of the LGBTQ community. She reportedly holds the distinction of earning the most single-year Grammy nominations for an openly queer Black woman.

“It took so long, I mean over half of my life to feel comfortable enough to say anything. So I feel now is the time to stand my ground and be proud of what I am and who I am,” Monét stated.

In addition to a Best New Artist nomination, Victoria Monét also has the chance to win Record Of The Year and Best R&B Song for her “On My Mama” single. “On My Mama” became a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Monét’s Jaguar II received Grammy Award nods for Best R&B Album and Best Engineered Album, Non-Classical. The RCA-backed vocalist also made it into the Best R&B Performance and Best Traditional R&B Performance categories.
